Why are TELA laptops leased?

Why has the Ministry elected to operate a lease scheme rather than purchasing laptops?

The scheme leases rather than purchases laptops to ensure the technology for each teacher and principal is updated every three years with modern up-to-date equipment. This helps reduce the amount of obsolete equipment being retained in schools and the cost of software licensing required. Leasing also spreads the cost out for both the school and Ministry instead of bulk up-front payments.
Edit

Can we purchase laptops through the TELA scheme?

The scheme is unable to sell the TELA laptops for purchase, however your nearest computer reseller for each brand will be able to provide a similar model for purchase. For more information, please contact the manufacturer. Contact information for TELA laptop purchases.

Can I try the laptops out before committing to a lease?

Most suppliers can supply a trial machine for the school to review prior to leasing.
For more information, please contact the manufacturer. Contact Information Page Edit

Why can I not take my laptop with me if I am changing schools?

The Ministry did investigate this option when developing the scheme. The administration and cost involved in unbundling leases and transferring them to a new school proved too prohibitive.

Why can I not change brand, model or return my laptop part way through my lease?

This option has been investigated but the cost and implementation requirements have proven to be prohibitive.
